The lonely ladies of Prahran

Chapel Street is a busy commercial boulevard in Melbourne with a rather schizophrenic character. At one end, where Toorak Rd intersects it the shops are trendy, the cafes small and atmospheric and the clientele not yet out of their 20’s. Cross Commercial Rd toward Dandenong Rd and the feel shifts. The shops sell cheap fabric, second hand goods and the number of winos increases. I prefer this end of the strip myself. And not because I’m a wino.

No, but because of the architectural facades that sit atop the current crop of shops. Like aged dowagers they preside silently over the proceedings, ignored and unnoticed by most passersby. These photos offer just a glimpse into these lonely ladies of Prahran, who though rather dishevelled exude an undeniable charm, even yet.
