I was in Hanoi last week for some work. On the final morning before I returned home I walked down the road to a large market that did a brisk wholesale trade in flowers. Dealers as well as householders were out picking up freshly cut, wet bunches of roses, water lilies and all sorts of other flowers whose names I don’ know but some of whose faces I recognised. These bouquets of water lilies greeted people at a stall right near the entrance o the market.
One of the stalls in the market.
A trio of housewives check out the roses.
The roses are individually wrapped in damp newspaper to preserve their freshness and aroma as long as possible.
Small scale sellers show off their wares to passersby on the busy road above the market.
